Checklists for International Students

Studying in a new country requires a lot of preparation. We have compiled practical checklists to help you keep track of everything. Here you will find everything you need to know – from the first steps before you arrive to important tasks on your arrival and the things you should do after your studies.

Please note that these checklists are only intended as a guide and are not exhaustive. Depending on your country of origin and your individual plans, you may need to take different or additional steps.

Checklist "Before Arrival"

There are a few important steps to take before you come to Regensburg. This checklist will help you get off to a good start.

  • Read general information about the application
  • Read all the buttons under "Application information" on the website of your chosen degree program
  • Prepare the required documents
  • Check deadlines - for many degree programs, documents can still be submitted after the application deadline
  • Register in the application portal
  • Send your application via the online portal before the deadline
  • Check the status of the application in the online portal a few days later
  • Submit additional documents if necessary
  • Wait for the letter of admission
  • Read information on enrolment
  • If admitted: accept the study place online
  • Read information about the visa
  • Register with VisaFlow (code "OTHREGENSBURG25") and prepare the visa procedure
  • Read information on financing
  • Secure financing (usually: blocked account)
  • Read information on health insurance
  • Take care of health insurance
  • Read information about housing
  • Looking for accommodation
  • Read information about the IT centre identifier
  • Download your IT identifier from the application portal
  • Log in to the Student Service Portal (SSP) as a student (no longer as an applicant)
  • Log in via the webmail server and set up a student mailbox
  • Plan and book your journey

Checklist "Upon Arrival"

Welcome to Regensburg! To ensure that your start runs smoothly, there are a few organizational matters to take care of. Here you will find the most important first steps.

  • Register with the Department of Foreigners' Affairs
  • Apply for a residence permit (if necessary)
  • Open a German bank account (for rent, insurance, salary)
  • Collect your student ID from the Admissions and Organization Office (if you have entered a postal address in Germany in the OTH Regensburg application portal, the ID will be sent to you by post approx. one week before the start of the semester)
  • Read thestudy start page in full
  • Validate your student ID card at a validation terminal at OTH Regensburg
  • Explore the city of Regensburg
  • Attend introductory events on the first day of the semester
  • Attendevents for international students

Checklist "After Your Studies"

Are your studies coming to an end? Regardless of whether you are leaving Germany or staying here – you should not forget a few organizational tasks. This checklist will help you:

  • Collect exam results & graduation documents
  • Apply for de-registration
  • Give notice on your apartment in good time & organize the handover if necessary
  • Deregister your residence at the residents' registration office
  • Close your bank account (if no longer needed)
  • Check job opportunities in Germany (if desired), apply for residence permit for work
  • Organize return journey or visa extension
  • Don't forget to say goodbye!
