Financing

If you come from a non-EU country, you must submit proof of your financial means when applying for a study visa. This serves as a guarantee that you can afford to study in Germany. Currently (as of 1 January 2025), you must prove that you have EUR 992 per month at your disposal. Further information on the blocked account can be found on the DAAD website.

However, due to the difficult housing situation in Regensburg, you will probably need more than your blocked account balance to pay for your room, food and daily needs. There are only a few subsidized rooms in student residences. International students are not given preferential treatment and rooms are allocated on the basis of a waiting list. As a new student, you may not be able to find a room in a hall of residence, so you will need to budget accordingly.

What you should know

  • You will need to budget at least EUR 1,000 to 1,200 per month for daily living expenses during your stay in Regensburg.

These are the approximate costs you should expect:

    • Rent for a room in a hall of residence / shared flat / apartment – monthly – EUR 300–510 / 350–600 / 500–900
    • Deposit – once before moving in (will be refunded after moving out if the living space is in order) – 2–3 cold rents (rent without utilities)
    • Broadcasting fee  monthly (per apartment) – EUR 19
    • Food  monthly – EUR 300–400
    • Internet / telephone – monthly – EUR 25–30
    • Meals in the canteen / restaurant – per meal – EUR 3–7 / 15–25
    • Health insurance (only applies to students from non-EU countries and from countries that do not have a social security agreement with Germany) – every semester (for the entire period you are enrolled) – EUR 150 (depending on the insurance provider)

    • Semester fee  EUR 201 (subject to change):
The semester fee is payable by all students each semester. The semester fee includes the RVV semester ticket and the contribution to the student union. For the first semester, the fee is due upon enrolment . For the following semesters, payment is due before the respective re-registration deadlines, which are published on our website.
    • Service fee for non-EU students in English-language degree programs – EUR 500:
This fee is charged each semester in addition to the regular semester fee and must be paid upon enrolment or re-registration. It serves to expand the services required for the support and integration of international students on English-language degree programs at OTH Regensburg.
