Registration with the Department of Foreigners' Affairs

If you are moving to Regensburg or relocating within the city, you must register your new address at the Citizens' Center within one week of moving into a room or apartment.

If you live in the city area, the Department for Foreigners' Affairs of the City of Regensburg is responsible for you.

Iif you live in Regensburg county (Landkreis), the Foreigners' Office of the county is responsible for you.

Please remember:
If you have already studied in Germany but would like to change your degree programme, you must inform the Department for Foreigners' Affairs in good time about the change of course! Otherwise your stay will be illegal!

What you should know

  • EU citizens as well as citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway must register with the city's Citizens' Center if they intend to stay for more than three months. They must apply there for a certificate of their right of residence under Community law = certificate of freedom of movement.

    The following are required for this:

    • Notice of residence for EU and EEA nationals and their family members
    • Valid passport
    • Biometric passport photo

  • Non-EU citizens must register at the Citizens' Center of the City of Regensburg within one week of their arrival in Regensburg and apply for a residence permit. The residence permit for students will only be issued after enrolment.

    The following documents are required to apply for a residence permit:

    • Application for a residence permit
    • Valid passport with entry visa
    • Certificate of enrolment from the university
    • Certificate from the health insurance company
    • Biometric passport photo
    • Proof of sufficient financial means (EUR 992 per month)
    • Money for fees
