What is the Master of Mathematics about?

This Master's programme builds directly on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor's in Mathematics. The three specialisations offered in the bachelor's degree are continued and accordingly, the degree is extremely practice-oriented. The aim is to enable graduates to work independently on demanding professional and academic tasks.

The course content includes:

  • Compulsory lectures in the fields of analysis, algebra, stochastics and optimisation
  • Advanced lectures in the above-mentioned areas
  • Applied lectures in the three specialisations, including: inverse problems and imaging, advanced robotics, IT security, numerical methods of financial mathematics, pricing of reinsurance contracts.

The transition from Bachelor to Master is very smooth. In certain cases, it is possible to attend lectures in the Master's programme even if some examinations from the Bachelor's programme have yet to be completed.

    • Automotive and aerospace industries: Partial differential equations are used to model numerous relevant technical processes. Functional analysis and advanced numerical methods are the basis for understanding and solving these equations.

Structure and modules

How is the degree programme structured?

The Master's in Mathematics may be studied either full-time or part-time. The full-time program has a standard duration of three semesters. There is also a dual-study option in cooperation with a company.

  • The Module Handbook describes all modules (subjects) in detail, including the following information:

    • Content
    • Study objectives: divided into subject-specific skills and personal skills
    • Form of teaching
    • Semester the module is assigned to
    • Teaching hours in hours per week (SWS)

  • The curriculum includes:

    • Mandatory mathematical modules: Algebra, Nonlinear Optimisation, Statistical Methods, Functional Analysis. 
    • A choice of specialisation modules
    • Applied Modules: May be chosen in the Insurance and Financial Mathematics, Technology and IT specialisations.

    You may decide to continue with the same specialisation chosen in your bachelor's degree, or broaden your skills by choosing an alternative specialisation.

    Master Thesis

    In your Master Thesis you will independently apply the knowledge and skills acquired during your studies to a specialised assignment. You will produce a written paper and prepare a presentation. Master theses can be assigned as internal projects or may be completed in cooperation with a company.

Dual studies

Closer to industry - dual studies

The Master's in Mathematics may also be completed as part of a dual-study programme, in the form of a degree with intensive in-company training. This requires a contract between you and a company or institution contractually approved by the university. Coordination between the university and the cooperating company is especially important in relation to final theses.

    The Master's in Mathematics undergoes regular accreditation and re-accreditation procedures and has always been successful. Accreditation was most recently awarded by the Internal Accreditation Commission, valid until 14 March 2026.

  • The Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics is a faculty of science and technology that has been in existence for almost 50 years. Therefore, the faculty strives equally to provide a solid grounding in fundamental principles for its students and to remain in touch with current developments in science, business and society. With about 1,975 students, the faculty is the largest computer science department at a University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. Our computer science and mathematics graduates have an excellent reputation and are highly sought-after employees. Since 2014, all our computer science degree programmes have regularly achieved top placements in the CHE ranking and we are one of the leading computer science departments nationwide.

  • The current far-reaching developments in computer science and the push for digitalisation throughout business and society have led to a large number of collaborations between the faculty and the regional business community. Current ideas from professional practice are assessed for their sustainability and, if they are considered to be forward-looking, are incorporated into existing programmes or inspire new courses, one example being the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science degree. These networks benefit our students in a variety of ways. They are highly sought-after as interns at companies in the region and these connections also result in a large number of external bachelor's and master's theses, which are written in cooperation with businesses on current practice-relevant topics.


  • All our professors are experts in future-oriented specialisations in addition to the traditional fundamentals of computer science and mathematics. Accordingly, they teach and conduct research in our 23 specialised modern laboratories and participate in cross-faculty research clusters as well as in the research-oriented cross-university "Regensburg Centers". As a student, you have the opportunity to work on future-oriented research topics through project work and you final thesis. In the Master's in Computer Science, students interested in research can choose the "research study option". Suitably qualified candidates may also complete a doctorate. Our professors supervise doctoral students in all fields of application.


  • Digitalisation is becoming increasingly important for both studying and teaching. The faculty is working to integrate virtual and hybrid teaching concepts into our programme and building on positive experiences from during the Corona pandemic. However, we also pursue other innovative teaching concepts to help students acquire new skills. For example, the OTH Regensburg Award for Innovation and Quality in Teaching has been awarded twice (2020 and 2022) to lecturers in the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics.

1. Please register in the OTH Regensburg application portal. It is not necessary to register with “Hochschulstart” for this degree programme.

2. The application process is entirely online. Please complete the online application and upload all required application documents.

3. Make sure you regularly check your status in the application portal. Here you can also see whether any documents are still missing. These documents must be submitted by the end of the deadline.

4. You will automatically receive email notifications via the application portal when your application status changes.

5. After your application has been processed, you will receive an e-mail with further information from the Admissions and Organisation Office of the OTH Regensburg as confirmation of receipt.

 

6.  If all application documents have been received within the application deadline and are valid, you will receive an e-mail with further information after the examination committee has checked the documents. Please note that it is no longer possible to apply after the application deadline.

1. Please register in the OTH Regensburg application portal.

Important components of the application are your university entrance qualification, your current transcript of grades from your previous studies and the application for credit transfer. If further documents are required, they will be requested in the application portal.

3. Make sure you regularly check your status in the application portal. Here you can also see whether any documents are still missing. These documents must be submitted by the end of the deadline. Please note that it only makes sense to apply for a higher semester if you have already obtained credits in the same or a closely related degree programme. If this is not the case or if you are in doubt about receiving credit, please apply (additionally) for a first semester.

4. After your application has been processed, you will receive an e-mail with further information from the Admissions and Organisation Department of the OTH Regensburg as confirmation of receipt.

 

5. If all application documents have been received within the application deadline and are valid, you will receive an e-mail with further information after the examination committee has checked the documents. Please note that it is no longer possible to apply after the application deadline. 

6. The examination committee decides on the crediting of academic achievements and whether a placement in a higher semester is possible. This placement is based on the creditable achievements and not on the semesters completed. Please note that there may also be admission restrictions in the admission procedure for higher semesters.

BACHELOR'S CERTIFICATE

For the application for a Master's degree programme at the OTH Regensburg (university of applied sciences) please submit your certificates and diplomas of your home country translated into German or English. The complete Bachelor's certificate with all subjects, the final grade and the grading scale is required. You can find detailed information in the admission requirements.

 

GERMAN LANGUAGE SKILLS

German language skills on level DSH 1 are required. You have to upload your German language certificate either when applying or when enrolling via the online portal.

These certificates are recognized as an alternative to the DSH 1 certificate:

  • TestDaF: TDN 3 in all sections of the exam
  • Studienkolleg: Feststellungsprüfung „Deutsch“
  • DSD: Level II with B2 in all sections of the exam
  • Goethe: C1
  • telc: telc Deutsch C1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
  • ÖSD: C1

Admission and enrolment

After the Master Commission has checked your documents, you will receive an admission or rejection notice by e-mail.
If you receive admission, you can immediately accept the place of study online in the application portal and upload the enrolment documents.
Enrolment generally takes place in August for a winter semester or in February for a summer semester.
 

Important information for online enrolment

Semester fee

The application for enrolment ("Antrag auf Immatrikulation") will include information about the current semester fee and the transfer details.

Documents

The following documents must normally be uploaded for online enrolment at the university:

  • Signed application for enrolment ("Antrag auf Immatrikulation") along with other documents required, depending on the individual case. You will receive this by e-mail.
  • Signed(declaration of consent regarding data protection (“Einwilligungserklärung zum Datenschutz”). You will receive this together with the application for enrolment.
  • Copy of valid identity card/passport
  • Digital notification of health insurance (M10), see the following notes "I would like to enrol. What do I have to do?"

I want to enrol as a student and have to provide proof of health insurance. What do I need to do?

  • Please contact your health insurance company and inform them that you would like to enrol at Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) Regensburg. That is all that you will need to do. Your health insurance company will then send us a digital notification which we will then confirm and return digitally. Please note that we cannot accept any insurance membership certificates in paper form. Our institution number is H0000048.


  • Please contact any statutory health insurance company in Germany with your insurance documents. Please inform the health insurance company that you would like to enrol at Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) Regensburg and remain privately insured. That is all that you will need to do. The health insurance company will then send us a digital notification of your exemption from compulsory insurance. Please note that we cannot accept an insurance membership certificate from your private health insurance. Our institution number is H0000048.


  • Please contact any statutory health insurance company in Germany with your insurance documents and inform them that you would like to enrol at Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) Regensburg. That is all that you will need to do. The health insurance company will then send us a digital notification. Please note that we cannot accept any insurance membership certificates in paper form.
