Electricity is a necessary prerequisite for our modern life. Security of supply is one of the key energy policy objectives in Germany. In an international comparison, the German electricity supply is very reliable. Nevertheless, power outages can occur at any time. An outage can last less than a second, but in complex situations it can last several days. Reasons for power outages can include construction work, weather conditions, technical defects and instability in the interconnected grid. However, the potential dangers of cyber attacks in the energy sector are also increasingly coming into focus.

What happens during a blackout? How high is the risk to modern societies? How prepared are grid operators? What are the consequences for the THW, fire department and disaster control?

Against this backdrop, the Regensburg Center of Energy and Resources (RCER) of the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (OTH Regensburg), with the support of the Regensburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Upper Palatinate / Kelheim and the Ostbayerische Technologie-Transfer-Institut (OTTI) e. V., organized the "3rd Regensburg Energy Congress - Focus: Blackout" on 8 and 9 March 2017. The two-day event brought together the views and experiences of companies, science and politics.

In addition to numerous presentations from business, science and politics, participants were treated to an interesting accompanying exhibition by renowned companies and institutions as well as a panel discussion and a varied accompanying program.
