OTH Regensburg is actively involved in organising Sustainability Week

Highlights include Campus Day on 25 June and a talk by meteorologist and science journalist Karsten Schwanke on 24 June at the Degginger.

Regensburg Sustainability Week begins on 18 June 2026 – and OTH Regensburg is taking part as a partner, contributing a varied programme of events to the activities taking place across the city. The university is hosting the event ‘Understanding Climate Change – Shaping Prosperity’ on Wednesday 24 June 2026 at 7.30 pm with meteorologist and science journalist Karsten Schwanke at the Degginger.

Climate change is already having a major impact on all our lives. Alongside wars and economic crises, it is affecting food and fuel prices, among other things, widening the gap between rich and poor, and threatening global health through heatwaves and extreme weather events. The keynote speech and subsequent discussion will focus on the interconnections: how does climate change influence the way we live together and our economy, and how can we actively shape our future?

Karsten Schwanke, a qualified meteorologist and science journalist, will deliver a keynote speech at the start of the event, providing a comprehensive overview of the data, consequences and potential solutions relating to climate change. This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Karsten Schwanke, Prof. Dr Georg Barfuß (Head of Economic, Scientific and Financial Affairs for the City of Regensburg), Prof. Dr Christoph Skornia (Vice-President for Digitalisation and Sustainability at OTH Regensburg), Prof. Dr Michael Sterner (Professor of Energy Storage, Energy Economics and Hydrogen at OTH Regensburg) and Martina Birk (Head of Sustainability, KRONES AG).

The event is free of charge; no registration is required.

Social Work students invite you to take part in a hands-on activity centred on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An interactive Memory game conveys key concepts in a fun way and highlights the connection to Regensburg.

24 June to 8 July 2026 – Mobile phone collection campaign

The Green Office, in cooperation with ‘Handyaktion Bayern’, is organising a collection drive for old mobile phones. These can be handed in at the University Library, the Student Union and the Green Office to ensure valuable resources are recycled.

25 June 2026, 2 pm to 6 pm – Campus Day

Together with the University of Regensburg, OTH Regensburg is organising a Campus Day featuring information stands and hands-on activities on the campus lawn. At the ‘Campus of the Future’, visitors can find out more about biodiversity and climate protection, recycling, equality and much more. The aim of the event, which takes place annually as part of Sustainability Week (NaWo), is to highlight and bring to life exemplary commitment to sustainability. It demonstrates that we can all contribute to sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda.

Among those taking part this year are AIESEC with their own competition, ‘Mit Sicherheit Verliebt’, the Student Health Management team at the University of Regensburg with a ‘Survival Camp’ comprising various workshops, and the Regensburg Consumer Service. There will also be an opportunity to swap plants. Naturally, the Sustainability Units and the Green Offices of OTH and the University of Regensburg are taking part, with activities including an SDG memory game, a ‘climate scale’ and a session for painting and printing on Fairtrade jute bags. Everyone on campus, whether part of the university community or not, is warmly invited to visit Campus Day.
