ReTra: Researching far-right networks across national borders

The ReTra research project (a sub-project within the ForGeRex programme) examines the ideology, structures and activities of the Ülkücü movement (‘Grey Wolves’) in Bavaria, as well as its links to Turkey. The focus is on local conditions conducive to the normalisation of right-wing extremism, the role of state actors and possible counter-strategies. The aim is to develop recommendations for action in the field of social work based on the research findings.

What is the title of your research project?

Transnational Forms of Right-wing Extremism: The Case of the Ülkücü Movement (ReTra)

Who is involved in the project?

Prof. Dr Martina Ortner and Rabia Kökten

What is your funded project?

ReTra is a sub-project within the ForGeRex programme. The project aims to shed light on the ideology, structure and activities of the so-called Grey Wolves in Bavaria, as well as their links extending as far as Turkey. In addition to the constellation of actors, contexts at the local level are being examined. What conditions lead to the normalisation of the far right with links to Turkey, what role do various state actors play in this, and what counterstrategies exist?

What excites you about the project?

We are excited by the topic itself, as well as the opportunity to engage with academics and practitioners in Bavaria, across Germany and in Turkey. The exchange within the interdisciplinary research network ForGeRex is inspiring.

How can findings from the project be applied in practice?

We will use our findings to develop recommendations for action in social work.
