What is the title of your research project?
HySEE: HYDROGEN IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE
Who is involved in the project?
The project is led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Sterner. The project team comprises Alexander Meisinger, Anton Achhammer and Doris Zeugner.
What is your funded project?
The HySEE research project investigates how a market for renewable hydrogen can be established in South-Eastern Europe and linked to Central Europe. To this end, we are analysing production potential, infrastructure and the political framework. The results will be incorporated into interactive planning tools and recommendations for action, similar to our Hydrogen Atlas for Germany (www.wasserstoffatlas.de). The aim is to facilitate investment and accelerate the market ramp-up of green hydrogen.
What excites you about the project?
Geographical maps bring complex relationships to life – that is precisely what excites us about this project. With the help of interactive maps, we can make the development of a future hydrogen economy understandable to everyone and clearly highlight its potential. Close collaboration with partners from several European countries is generating new ideas and joint solutions. In this way, we are contributing to the energy transition, European energy security and climate protection.
How can the findings from the project be applied in practice?
The project results support companies, network operators and policy-makers in planning hydrogen projects and infrastructure. The maps and planning tools developed help to identify suitable locations for the production, transport and use of renewable hydrogen. The policy recommendations outline ways to remove regulatory barriers and design appropriate funding instruments.
