Digital Hate: Researching digital violence against female academics

Digital violence can limit the visibility of female academics and jeopardise the free exchange of scientific ideas. The “Digital Hate” research project investigates the extent, forms and impacts of gender-specific digital violence against female professors in contested fields of research. The aim is to improve support services, develop effective counter-strategies and strengthen academic freedom.

What is the title of your research project?

Digital Hate: Digital violence against female professors in contested fields of knowledge

Who is involved in the project?

Prof. Dr Clarissa Rudolph, Prof. Dr Katherine Gürtler, Kyra Schneider, Nina Vischer

What is your funded project?

The research project ‘Digital Hate – Digital Violence against Female Academics in Contested Fields of Knowledge’ analyses gender-specific digital violence – in particular its extent, forms, content and impacts – with a focus on gendered power structures and intersectional dynamics. In addition, the project aims to examine coping strategies and support structures at colleges and universities and to contribute to the structural development of effective counter-strategies and support measures.

What excites you about the project?

The project focuses on a socially highly relevant issue that has so far been little researched. Digital violence affects not only individual female researchers, but can also impair academic exchange and the visibility of research. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to link academic findings with concrete recommendations for higher education institutions and universities. In this way, we can help to better protect researchers and strengthen academic freedom.

How can the findings from the project be applied in practice?

The findings from the project can help higher education institutions to further develop existing support services for those affected in a targeted manner and to strengthen preventive measures. They also provide a scientific basis for addressing digital violence in the higher education context. In the long term, this may lead to practical recommendations for university management, equality offices and other support organisations. In this way, the project helps to promote a safe environment for research, teaching and academic exchange.
