Halle-A Lecture: Augmented Carpentry - Integrating Traditional Carpentry into Modern Data Flows

You are invited to the next Halle-A Lecture on June 3, 2025.

Augmented Carpentry is an open-source framework that digitizes everyday carpentry tasks without requiring expensive robotic systems. It is a PhD research conducted at the Timber Construction Laboratory (IBOIS) at EPFL by Andrea Settimi (PhD researcher), Dr. Julien Gamerro (Co-director), and Prof. Yves Weinand (Director and Head). It retrofits ordinary handheld tools, such as drills and saws, with affordable cameras and sensors. By tracking both tool and timber elements in real-time, operators receive live guidance on cutting, drilling, and fitting with millimeter-level accuracy. This hybrid approach blends human skill with computational feedback, making advanced digital fabrication more accessible to small and medium-sized timber enterprises while preserving the adaptability and craft that define traditional woodworking.
