In addition to academic qualifications, a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW) requires at least five years of relevant professional experience, of which at least three years must be outside the academic sector. At traditional universities, however, the focus is on demonstrating additional academic achievements — typically through a habilitation or equivalent scholarly accomplishments.
The focus of a HAW professorship is on teaching. Smaller study groups foster closer collaboration with students and enable a more practice-oriented approach to teaching. Independent research is also expected, but only insofar as the respective teaching obligations have been fulfilled.
Under the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG), Universities of Applied Sciences (HAWs) with a strong research profile in specific areas can acquire the right to award doctorates. Our university has already established severalGraduate Centersthat coordinate and support doctoral projects. Cooperative or joint doctoral programs with universities continue to be available.
