Our university is one of the most important drivers of innovation in the region through cooperative research projects with business, industry and institutions.

Numerous research facilities, institutes, centers and laboratories across various subject areas provide our professors with resources for their work. The Center for Research and Transfer (ZFT)at OTH Regensburg offers comprehensive support for research and transfer topics, e.g. in the area of publicly funded research projects, contract research and laboratory services.

Contemporary scientific insights are integrated into professional practice and disseminated to practitioners via interdisciplinary teaching. A collaborative exchange ensures that innovative research informs professional practice, while insights from the field enrich the academic work at the unviersity.

  • Academic self-administration and university management

In addition to teaching and research, participation in academic self-administration is another core task of a professorship. This includes work in committees or taking on functional roles within the faculty (e.g. faculty management) or the university (e.g. senate). As part of university management, professors have the opportunity to actively contribute to shaping the institution.

Innovations in teaching and learning and professorships for teaching innovation

We promote innovative teaching and learning methods and support our professors in implementing new approaches to university didactic concepts. We strengthen these efforts with various instruments to promote teaching innovation (including professorships for teaching innovation). Professors selected for the programme have up to three years to specify and try out their ideas for new teaching formats - with a reduced teaching load. The aim is to develop, test and scientifically support new university didactic concepts.

Autonomy and flexibility through research professorships and research extension professorships

We offer our professors the opportunity to intensify their research work using the instruments of the research professorship or research extension professorship while reducing their teaching duties. The research professorship frees up time for research and transfer by reducing the teaching load by up to 50%. The research extension professorship offers a correspondingly smaller reduction with fewer formal requirements.

  • Industry and external research institutions

Our university highly values cooperation with industry and academic institutions. The proximity to the University of Regensburg, theTechBase Regensburgand theBioParkon the TechCampus is particularly advantageous.

FAQs

  • The main duties of professors at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW) include teaching, research, continuing education, knowledge and technology transfer, committee work and administrative tasks. See Art. 59 of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG) for details of full-time official duties.

This stipulates that professors independently fulfill the responsibilities assigned to their university. For the HAW professorship this means a focus is on application-oriented teaching. Research is carried out as an official task to the extent that the respective teaching duties are fulfilled. This does not affect the possibility of establishing research professorships or specialization professorships.

  • The regular teaching load at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW) usually comprises 18 semester hours per week (SWS) for a full-time professorship.

A reduction in the teaching load is possible within the framework of individual target agreements, e.g. in connection with a research professorship.

  • In addition to academic qualifications, a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW) requires at least five years of relevant professional experience, of which at least three years must be outside the academic sector. At traditional universities, however, the focus is on demonstrating additional academic achievements — typically through a habilitation or equivalent scholarly accomplishments.

The focus of a HAW professorship is on teaching. Smaller study groups foster closer collaboration with students and enable a more practice-oriented approach to teaching. Independent research is also expected, but only insofar as the respective teaching obligations have been fulfilled.

Under the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG), Universities of Applied Sciences (HAWs) with a strong research profile in specific areas can acquire the right to award doctorates. Our university has already established severalGraduate Centersthat coordinate and support doctoral projects. Cooperative or joint doctoral programs with universities continue to be available.

  • No, a habilitation is not required for an appointment to a professorship at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW).

  • If appointed as a civil servant*, professorships at OTH Regensburg receive the W2 salary level which applies in the Free State of Bavaria. You can find the latest salary tables on the website of theBavarian State Office of FinanceorÖffentlicher-Dienst.Info

In addition, variable performance bonuses are awarded alongside the basic salary, e.g. for special achievements in research and teaching or for taking on special tasks within the scope of university administration or management.

*In Bavaria, the age limit for becoming a civil servant is 52. If the age limit is exceeded, employment under a regular contract is possible.

  • Art. 56 of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG) and the Bavarian Regulation on Secondary Employment for University Lecturers (BayHSchLNV) contain the legal basis for the assessment of professors' secondary employment. Pursuant to this, one fifth of the regular weekly working time may be spent on secondary employment in addition to full-time employment, which usually amounts to eight hours per week.
