IT management for SMEs

Simon Kratzer has successfully completed his doctorate in economics. He now wants to set up his own business in the property sector.

  1. The doctorate is over - what does that mean for you personally ? A challenging and instructive chapter in my life is coming to an end. Although I'm pleased to have completed my doctorate, I will have very fond memories of this time.

  2. What is your dissertation about? My dissertation is mainly about the role of the Fractional Chief Information Officer (CIO) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The fractional CIO works as a part-time CIO for several SMEs at the same time. This gives SMEs access to IT expertise and experience while saving costs and remaining flexible. Among other things, a definition, various engagement types and the associated success factors were identified for the role.

  3. What was a highlight or special experience in connection with your doctorate? The intensive exchange with 62 very experienced fractional CIOs from 10 different countries and the great interest of the practice in my research.

  4. What plans do you have for your professional future? I would like to set up my own company in the property sector and create sustainable value for my clients.

  5. What tips can you give future doctoral students? Exchange ideas with other researchers as early as possible. Work in a solution-orientated and goal-oriented way and don't get confused by the huge amount of literature.

  6. Why did you choose OTH Regensburg for your doctorate? I became aware of Prof Westner through the recommendation of a work colleague. We got on very well straight away and the supervision throughout my doctorate was excellent!
