A first for OTH Regensburg at the Guggenberger Legionäre BBQ Cup

On the evening of Monday 18 May 2026, around 20 staff members from the university swapped their desks for baseball bats and took to the field for the first time as a team in the popular company tournament at the Armin-Wolf-Arena.

Given the partnership between the Guggenberg Legionnaires and OTH Regensburg, for many participants this was more than just a post-work sporting event. Under the team name ‘Faculty of Applied Quick-Wittedness’, the university team took to the pitch alongside numerous teams from local businesses and organisations.

Warm-up with baseball pros

During a short warm-up with coaches Valentin Thumann and Eric Harms, who both play for the Legionäre’s DBL team, some of the participants held a baseball in their hands for the first time. The two pros not only explained the most important rules but also gave initial tips on batting technique, throwing and running routes. Each team played one inning of baseball – and the OTH team performed remarkably well in its first appearance.

The opening match against “Netbeat x Solaris” ended in a close 7–9 defeat. Things got even more exciting in the second match against the “Photon Pitchers” from ams Osram: after the score was tied at 8–8, a tie-break was needed to decide the winner, which the opponents managed to win by the narrowest of margins.

Strong result: 16th place out of 45 teams

In the end, OTH Regensburg finished 16th out of a total of 45 teams – a strong result for their first appearance at the BBQ Cup.

Alongside sporting ambition, the focus was above all on team spirit, cheering each other on and the fun of trying something new. In the special stadium atmosphere, it quickly became clear: the OTH team has developed a taste for baseball. Many of the participants want to continue training together in future – and compete again at the next BBQ Cup.
