PHAB - Pedagogical action in the context of anti-Semitism in Bavaria - challenges, resources and prevention strategies

The "PHAB" research project was launched at OTH Regensburg (Faculty of Social and Health Sciences) in December 2025 under the direction of Prof Dr Mehmet Kart. The project investigates how educational professionals in Bavaria deal with anti-Semitism in youth work, youth education and related fields of action.

Who is part of the research team?

The head of the project is Prof Dr Mehmet Kart. The research assistants are Dr Corina Schiegl and Andreas Hastreiter.

What is the research project about?

The project investigates how educational professionals in Bavaria deal with anti-Semitism in youth work, youth education and related fields of action. The project aims to develop practical impulses for strengthening tolerance, democracy education and anti-Semitism prevention. The focus is on the experiences, action strategies and support needs of educational professionals. At the same time, existing training and further education programmes and prevention measures will be systematically recorded in order to analyse the current status of educational and prevention work in Bavaria and to identify development needs.

How can findings from the project be applied in practice?

Studies in Germany are currently documenting a worrying level of anti-Semitic attitudes and incidents. Research projects that have already been carried out or are still ongoing have already confirmed key needs for action based on the inadequate preparation of prospective teachers and social workers in dealing with anti-Semitism, uncertainty in dealing with religious conflicts and increasing anti-Semitic incidents in youth facilities. These findings highlight the need for in-depth research and the development of sustainable prevention and education strategies that can be anchored in the pedagogical practice of youth and educational work.

What is exciting about this project?

The project focuses on educational practice and makes a decisive contribution to professionalisation and prevention in dealing with anti-Semitism.
