The Gesellschaft für Sicherheitswissenschaft e. V. (GfS) awards the Peter Compes Prize for the promotion of young scientists in the field of security science for the year 2025 to a young scientist for his outstanding doctoral thesis.
Mr Robert Maier conducted research as a doctoral student in the Laboratory for Safe and Secure Systems (LaS³) of Prof. Dr Jürgen Mottok at OTH Regensburg as part of a cooperative doctoral project at the Chair of Computer Engineering (Prof. Dr Christian Siemers) at Clausthal University of Technology on "Industrialisation of causal probabilistic graphical models: A contribution to the safety of the intended function of autonomous vehicles".
The work combines modern approaches to causal modelling and inference with practice-oriented standards of functional safety. Dr Maier used structural-causal models to extend the methodology of scenario-based testing in accordance with ISO 21448. This enables the systematic identification of potential safety risks and the early development of effective countermeasures.
With the award of the Peter Compes Prize, the GfS praises the work of the prizewinner and hopes that the young scientist will perform his future achievements in full awareness of his discipline and thus also benefit security science, according to the laudator and President of the GfS, Dr Sebastian Festag.
The prize money for the Peter Compes Prize is donated by Mr Harald Hauff, who for his part has been active in security science for many years, particularly in the fields of information technology security and functional security, and who has been in contact with the Society for Security Science for many years.
Founded in Wuppertal in 1978, the GfS promotes young talent in the field of security science and also pursues the philosophy of an independent, self-contained and interdisciplinary security science. In this context, the GfS offers those involved in this field a common and broad platform for exchange, for which it organises security science symposia or takes a position on specific security issues.
