The Regensburg side kicked off the tournament with a 0–0 draw against Coburg. This was followed by a 1–1 draw against hosts OTH Amberg-Weiden, before the team celebrated their first win with a 3–2 victory over Landshut. Things then went really well: against Aschaffenburg (4–1), Weihenstephan (4–0) and Augsburg (2–0), the team put in a convincing performance and made it through to the semi-finals.
Awaiting them in the final was Deggendorf University of Applied Sciences. After a thrilling and hard-fought match, OTH Regensburg were only beaten 4–6 in the penalty shoot-out. However, the disappointment at the narrow defeat did not last long – the joy at the well-deserved runners-up title prevailed.
1st place in the goal-wall shooting and Human Kicker competitions
OTH Regensburg also had reason to celebrate in the individual competitions: Andreas Besenhard won the goal-wall shooting and was named the best participant in the goal-wall event. Tobias Wolf secured the title of top scorer with his goals.
The OTH Regensburg line-up was as follows: Moritz Bauer (goalkeeper), Andreas Biersack, Michael Wolfsteiner (player-coach), Andreas Lehnerer, Tobias Wolf (top scorer), Andreas Besenhard, Denis Lazar, Paul Boland, Daniel Oppelt, Taoufik Mghiouach, Andreas Schukalla and Andrei Földi. The team was accompanied by team manager Vera Littkopf.
There was plenty going on off the pitch too. OTH Regensburg put in strong performances at the goal-scoring wall, football darts and Human Kicker. In Human Kicker, the team “OTHilde”, consisting mainly of women, took first place.
Some participants also took the opportunity to explore Amberg on a guided tour of the town or a boat trip on the River Vils. We were delighted to welcome Chancellor Utto Spielbauer during the day, who was also out and about doing some sport – he cycled the approximately 65 kilometres between Regensburg and Amberg and back on his road bike.
A commanding team performance by OTH Regensburg
All the universities rounded off the successful day of competition together at the evening event in Amberg’s Congress Hall. With the prize-giving ceremony, good food and music, there was plenty of time to chat with the teams from the other universities and reflect on the successful day.
The runners-up title, the victories in the penalty shoot-out and Human Kicker, and the title of top scorer show that OTH Regensburg was not only successful on the pitch in Amberg, but also excelled as a team. In 2027, the 48th Bavarian Universities’ Football Championship will take place in Ansbach.
