OTH Regensburg graduate Markus Langmantel awarded Braumandl Prize

Markus Langmantel, a graduate of the Electrical and Microsystems Engineering master's programme at OTH Regensburg, was honoured with the Brigitta and Oskar Braumandl Foundation Study Award for his outstanding master's thesis on magnetic nanoparticles in medical technology.

Markus Langmantel received the Braumandl Prize, worth €10,000, at the City of Regensburg's scholarship ceremony in the historic Reichssaal. The award recognises his excellent academic achievements and his exceptional commitment to the university.

In his master's thesis on the synthesis of monocrystalline magnetite nanoparticles for medical diagnostics, Markus Langmantel addressed a highly topical research topic: the development and optimisation of magnetic nanoparticles for use in medical technology. These nanoparticles are intended to enable fast and reliable diagnostics in point-of-care devices that deliver results directly to the patient. Blood glucose meters are one example of this.

Research at the interface of nanotechnology and medical technology

Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Corinna Kaulen as part of the DFG-funded FEMIC project, Langmantel developed an experimental approach to produce highly crystalline, biocompatible nanoparticles that are both magnetically detectable and functionalizable. Markus Langmantel immersed himself deeply in the theory of synthesis and complex analysis methods. He did not let setbacks deter him, as Prof. Kaulen emphasised in her laudatory speech. He optimised the synthesis of the particles, thereby making a valuable contribution to the progress of the project.

‘Markus has familiarised himself with this complex subject matter with great scientific depth and perseverance. He has shown that with perseverance, technical expertise and enthusiasm for the subject, even the most demanding challenges can be mastered,’ emphasised Prof. Kaulen.

Outstanding commitment to the student body

In addition to his academic work, Markus Langmantel was involved in student initiatives at OTH Regensburg for many years. He did this at his faculty as head of the Applied Natural and Cultural Sciences Student Council, as well as in the student representation on the Faculty Council. Across the university, he was represented for many years in the student convention and the student council, where he represented the interests of students vis-à-vis the university management and other bodies.

‘Despite all his commitments, Markus is always helpful and friendly in everyday life, so it has always been a pleasure to work with him,’ said Prof. Kaulen. Prof. Dr. Ralph Schneider, President of OTH Regensburg, also attended the award ceremony and congratulated Markus Langmantel on his award.

Markus Langmantel thanked his supervisor Prof. Kaulen and the jury: ‘I am very pleased about this award. It is not only recognition of my work, but also motivation to continue on this path – in research, but also in my commitment to a strong student body.’

The Braumandl Prize

Since 2023, the Brigitta and Oskar Braumandl Foundation has been honouring outstanding students at OTH Regensburg and the University of Regensburg who have distinguished themselves through exceptional achievements, diligence and social commitment. The foundation's goal is to promote young talent who embody the values of drive, intellectual curiosity and responsibility – regardless of their financial circumstances.
