Professor Karsten Weber shapes future research at KIT

Prof. Dr. Karsten Weber, an expert in technology assessment at OTH Regensburg, has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board for the ‘Earth and Environment’ research area at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

KIT is a research university of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, one of the largest scientific research organisations in the world. The Scientific Advisory Board advises the KIT Executive Board and monitors ongoing research.
Prof. Dr. Karsten Weber has been teaching and researching at OTH Regensburg since 2013 and is co-director of the Institute for Social Research and Technology Assessment (IST) at OTH Regensburg. On 1 October 2022, Weber took up the research professorship ‘Technology Assessment for AI-supported Mobility’ at OTH Regensburg, the first of three professorships that the university won in the AI competition as part of the High-Tech Agenda (HTA) of the Free State of Bavaria.

In 2023, Prof. Weber was appointed to the KIT Scientific Advisory Board for the research area of ‘Information’; due to a strategic realignment in the Helmholtz research areas of “Information” and ‘Earth and Environment,’ he is now changing advisory boards.

High praise for Weber's achievements to date

‘On the occasion of this change, we would like to express our sincere thanks for your extraordinary commitment and your many years of service on the ’Information" advisory board. Your sound assessments and valuable advice have been invaluable. You have made a significant contribution to raising the scientific profile of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and strengthening our research in the long term," states Prof. Weber's letter of reappointment.

Prof. Weber himself says: ‘For me, this appointment is a sign that scientists at universities of applied sciences can work on an equal footing with universities. I am also particularly pleased that the appointment involves collaboration with my alma mater, as I studied and did my doctorate in Karlsruhe.’

As sustainability officer for the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, the combination of an IT perspective and sustainability-oriented research is of particular interest to Prof. Weber: ‘I hope this will generate new ideas for the sustainable design of our university.’

New ideas for the sustainable design of OTH Regensburg

Prof. Dr. Christoph Skornia, Vice President of OTH Regensburg for Sustainability, also congratulated Prof. Dr. Karsten Weber on his appointment to the KIT Advisory Board for Earth and Environment: "Prof. Weber not only brings top-class scientific expertise to KIT, but also strengthens our common endeavour: at OTH Regensburg, we have adopted a sustainability strategy that anchors sustainability in teaching, research, operations and student engagement. We are aiming for climate neutrality by 2027, want to generate renewable energy and establish sustainability as a compulsory subject in every degree programme. In this respect, Weber's new mandate shows how we can help shape our strategic goals at a high level while at the same time achieving concrete added value for our university."
