New Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Natural Sciences

In the 2026/27 winter semester, OTH Regensburg will launch a degree programme for anyone who doesn’t want to choose between physics, chemistry and engineering, but would rather combine them all.

From smartphone sensors to medical technology: modern technologies emerge where several disciplines converge. The new Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Natural Sciences brings together the previous degree programmes in Microsystems Engineering and Environmental and Industrial Sensors, and will in future also be offered as a dual-study programme. The programme is aimed at anyone interested in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT) who is looking for a degree programme that is broad in scope, practice-oriented and, at the same time, forward-looking.

Broad foundational knowledge meets individual specialisation

During the programme, students acquire in-depth knowledge of chemistry, physics, mathematics, electrical engineering and programming. This combination provides a solid interdisciplinary foundation that specifically prepares students for modern technologies and current issues in research and development.

As the course progresses, students have the opportunity to choose individual areas of specialisation, such as semiconductor and microsystems technology or sensor technology. Alternatively, they can choose to continue their studies with a deliberately broad focus, equipping themselves with a versatile skill set.

“With this degree programme, we are building a bridge between a sound understanding of the natural sciences and practical interdisciplinarity – a key skill for meeting the challenges of our time,” emphasises Prof. Dr Katherine Gürtler, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Natural and Cultural Sciences. “In particular, the specialisations in sensor technology and in semiconductor and microsystems technology address key fields of the future. In doing so, they make an important contribution to strengthening Regensburg as a centre of innovation and to safeguarding our digital sovereignty.”

Practical study – including the dual study programme

There is a particular focus on practical training. Alongside lectures and seminars, students work in state-of-the-art laboratories, including a cleanroom laboratory and the Sensor Technology Application Centre. A compulsory work placement in the fifth semester further reinforces the practical focus.

“The Applied Natural Sciences degree programme is for anyone who doesn’t just want to know which button to press, but why the whole thing works. With us, you’ll gain a solid grounding in engineering, the natural sciences and digitalisation – but you won’t be left to your own devices,” says programme director Prof. Dr Matthias Ehrnsperger. “Here, lecturers and students work closely together, pulling in the same direction and bringing ideas to life in the lab, in projects and in real-world applications. It is precisely this combination that makes the programme so special: a strong foundation, plenty of practical experience and a team that really supports the students.”

The degree programme can also be undertaken as a dual study programme. In this model, theory and practice are closely intertwined: alongside their studies, students gain professional experience in a company and can apply their knowledge directly. At the same time, companies benefit from securing qualified young talent at an early stage and providing them with targeted training.

Excellent career prospects in sectors with a bright future

Graduates of the programme possess a versatile skill set and are in high demand across numerous sectors. Potential fields of work include: semiconductor and sensor technology, technical optics and image processing, medical technology,

the automotive industry, smart home and communications technologies, Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The programme therefore provides an excellent foundation for a career in research, development or industrial applications.
