Launch of the European university alliance ARTEMIS

Ten universities from across Europe have joined forces to form the ARTEMIS University Alliance for a period of four years.

The aim of the alliance is to combine the strengths and diversity of European research and teaching in new structures in order to meet the challenges facing Europe. ARTEMIS will receive a total of €8.64 million in EU funding, with OTH Regensburg receiving more than €1 million of this.

In addition to OTH Regensburg, the alliance's partners include Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA) in Clermont-Ferrand, France, which is coordinating the project, as well as Hogeschool VIVES Zuid in Kortrijk, Belgium, Høgskulen på Vestlandet HVL in Bergen, Norway, Tallinna Tehnikakõrgkool TKTK from Tallinn, Estonia, Universitatea ‘Ovidius’ din Constanța, Romania, the University of Ioannina, Greece, and the Università degli studi di Perugia, Italy. The two Ukrainian universities Taras-Shevchenko National University Kyiv and Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University are participating as associated partners.

They all pursue a common, integrated, long-term strategy for education, research and innovation with a focus on societal challenges using a multidisciplinary approach. Specific plans include, for example, the establishment of a European virtual university campus, the provision of joint, flexible and innovative curricula, and alternative learning pathways for learners in all stages of life.

"In the European University Alliance ARTEMIS, OTH Regensburg has the unique opportunity to work with its partners to bring the European idea to life in the design of study programmes and research collaborations. Even during the preparation of the application for the alliance, EU projects, exchange agreements and cultural activities such as the Campus Europavox student music competition were developed with our partners, in which our new friends in Ukraine are also closely involved," says Prof. Dr Oliver Steffens, Vice President for Research, Transfer and Internationalisation.

The name ARTEMIS is an acronym for ‘Alliance for Regional Transition, Equality, Mobility, Inclusion, and Sustainability,’ which reflects the overarching framework of the consortium, namely regionality, unity, mobility, inclusion and sustainability. On the other hand, the name refers to the Greek goddess Artemis, who is considered, among other things, the protector of roads and ports – fitting for the overarching theme of mobility.

Eighteen renowned companies and institutions from the region have already declared their intention to cooperate within ARTEMIS by signing a letter of intent.
