Village development and the use of vacant properties: Architecture students present an exhibition

In many rural areas, former town centres are increasingly falling into disuse: buildings are falling into disrepair, whilst at the same time there is a shortage of housing for young families. The ‘Innen statt Außen’ initiative, run by the Upper Palatinate Office for Rural Development, supports local authorities in renovating and revitalising historic buildings.

To mark this occasion, fifth-semester architecture students at OTH Regensburg undertook an in-depth study of the issues of vacant properties, village development and housing provision in the Upper Palatinate. The focus was on the municipalities of Tännesberg, Oberwildenau, Neudorf and Kaibitz. The students developed concepts for the preservation and conversion of vacant buildings, as well as complementary new constructions, designed to strengthen the existing village structure and counteract the further decline of these communities.

The municipality of Tännesberg was examined in particular detail: vacant properties were analysed and new development ideas were devised. In total, around 30 architectural models and designs were produced.

The students’ results are being presented at the House of Biodiversity in Tännesberg. At the exhibition opening on Thursday, 14 May, from 11:00 am, the students will present their projects as part of a series of talks.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors can view the models and concepts, chat with the students and also explore the permanent exhibition ‘What is Biodiversity?’. Families can also look forward to an exciting children’s treasure hunt there. Regional food and drink round off the programme.
