Young Care Manager of the Year

2nd place in the Care Management Award: OTH student Borislav Bačić honoured

What will good leadership in tomorrow's healthcare sector look like? Borislav Bačić provides one answer: the student of the part-time bachelor's degree programme in Nursing Management at OTH Regensburg was awarded second place in the Nursing Management Award 2026 as ‘Young Nursing Manager of the Year’.

Bačić impressed the jury with his high level of professional and social competence, his outstanding leadership skills and his ability to remain calm in crisis situations in the demanding day-to-day care environment. The award is presented by the Federal Association of Care Management in cooperation with Springer Pflege. It is one of the most prestigious honours in the care sector in German-speaking countries.

In its statement, the Federal Association of Nursing Management praised Bačić as a ‘prime example of successful integration, nursing excellence and strong leadership’. He came to Germany from Serbia in 2018, took part in the ‘Triple Win’ programme and, in addition to his work on the ward, quickly gained professional recognition and passed the German language exam. Shortly afterwards, he took on management responsibility for the cardiology ward and developed a high-performing top team from a team with high staff turnover.

Study alongside your career and take on leadership responsibilities

Borislav Bačić (30) has been studying for the eighth time in the part-time bachelor's degree programme in nursing management at OTH Regensburg since the winter semester 2023/2024. The large cohort started with 20 students. Bačić plans to complete his degree in the summer semester of 2027.

He has been deputy ward manager of the cardiology ward with stroke unit at the Barmherzige Brüder hospital in Regensburg since 2023, and in 2024 Bačić took over as acting manager of this ward. The combination of academic further education and direct management practice is exemplary for the study concept of OTH Regensburg, which specifically links scientifically based leadership skills with the requirements of nursing practice.

"This award means a lot to me personally, especially when I think back to when I came to Germany seven years ago and never expected to pursue this career path. The fact that I am able to study today and take on leadership responsibilities at the same time fills me with great gratitude. This recognition motivates me to continue my professional and personal development and to continue on my path in nursing. I very much hope that my story can encourage and motivate other people – especially international nursing staff who are following a similar path," says Borislav Bačić.

Contribution to the professionalisation of nursing care

Prof. Dr. Annette Meussling-Sentpali, programme director of the part-time bachelor's degree programme in nursing management, emphasises: ‘We are very pleased and proud that Mr. Bačić, one of our students, is among the award winners! It shows how well-trained and motivated managers can influence employee satisfaction and ultimately the quality of care.’

At the same time, she underscores the importance of the programme: ‘It also shows that we are on the right track with our part-time nursing management programme and can contribute to producing highly qualified managers.’

The programme is aimed at nursing professionals who want to acquire leadership and management skills while continuing to work. The close integration of science and practice enables students to directly incorporate current challenges in everyday nursing into academic reflection – and, conversely, to bring scientifically sound solutions to their institutions.
