BayWater - Strategies for sustainable water management

The BayWater project is all about the sustainable use of drinking water, a vital resource. The focus is on the treatment of wastewater from water-intensive production processes.

Who is involved in your project?

The project is headed by Prof Dr Rudolf Bierl, who is supported by research assistants Florian Olbrich and Simon Jobst.

What is your research project about?

The aim is to reduce waste water from industrial companies to a minimum. With the help of various pre-treatment methods tailored to the different types of wastewater, it is treated in such a way that it can be reused as process water with the help of reverse osmosis as a key technology. Important components for the success of the project are advanced pre-treatment methods, precise sensor technology and data-driven process control.

What excites you about the project?

Researching technologies to enable a transition to a circular economy in the industrial water sector is an exciting task. We feel that sustainability, especially in relation to water, is extremely important. The consortium, consisting of six research institutions and 25 practice partners, is a particular strength of the project.

How can findings from the project be applied in practice?

Thanks to this project, industrial companies can purify and reuse their wastewater streams for specific applications, thereby saving valuable resources.
