Lecture Overview
10:00 – 10:40 a.m. | Room K004
“Alcohol: Why We Drink It – and What It Does to Us”
Speaker: Prof. Klaudia WinklerFor many of us, alcohol consumption is a natural part of everyday life – whether it’s an after-work beer, a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate a special occasion, beer pong to welcome first-semester students, or alcohol at campus festivals. In the lecture “Alcohol: Why We Drink It – and What It Does to Us”, alcohol will be examined as a psychoactive substance that may provide short-term relaxation, relief, and a sense of well-being, but whose consumption also carries significant long-term risks. The lecture focuses on the mechanisms that make alcohol both “effective” and, at the same time, potentially problematic. The talk is aimed at both staff and students and invites participants to reflect on the role alcohol plays in our society as well as on their own relationship with alcohol.
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | Room K004
“Hangover or High Performance – A Conscious Approach to Alcohol in Everyday Life”
Speaker: Tim Englbrecht (GetFitByTim GmbH)How exactly does alcohol affect the body? When does consumption become problematic? And what delicious alternatives are available? This lecture revolves around the topic of alcohol prevention – informative, practical, and without being moralizing. The focus is on typical situations from student life: parties, peer pressure, habits, and the question of how alcohol affects concentration, sleep, performance, and overall well-being. In a clear and practical way, participants will learn about the effects regular alcohol consumption can have on the body and brain, and why conscious decisions are often more closely linked to everyday routines and social environments than we might think. The aim of the lecture is not to lecture or prohibit, but to provide knowledge, encourage reflection, and promote a mindful approach to alcohol. Participants will also receive practical strategies for navigating social situations without excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, visitors can look forward to alcohol-free mixed drinks. The accompanying information stand invites participants to discover new alcohol-free alternatives and gain fresh ideas for greater health and enjoyment in everyday life.

Whether digital or analog, in the lecture hall, office or at the kitchen table - lectures, discussions and meetings are appointments that can be extremely tiring, especially due to long periods of sitting and the concentration required. If you're out of breath or have finished your coffee, it's hard to avoid dozing off.
The active break is designed for precisely this situation. Short videos (around 6 minutes each) instruct and demonstrate easy movement exercises that can be carried out in any lecture hall, conference room or office. Firmly integrated into everyday university life, regular active breaks keep you fit, healthy and focused - for a radiant performance, even on long days.
The videos were made available with the kind support of the University of Regensburg.

What is a Mental Health First Aider?
Mental Health First Aiders provide initial support following distressing events as well as in everyday situations. They offer emotional support, listen, and help stabilize those affected to prevent long-term psychological consequences. Their primary responsibilities include recognizing symptoms of mental distress, conducting confidential conversations, calming the individual, and referring them to professional help. They are trained peers—not therapists—comparable to traditional first aiders for physical emergencies, but on a psychological level.
Detailed information will be discussed during the Awareness Session. Further information is available in the attachment.
How to Become a Mental Health First Aider:
The first step is to attend the Awareness Session on "Mental Health in the Workplace." This event is conducted by the training provider "Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)".
Goal:
Through this 90-minute keynote lecture, participants will be sensitized to action steps and strategies for a psychologically healthier workplace. The goal is to build upon this session to train Mental Health First Aiders at OTH.
Date & Time:
January 28, 2026, 9am - 10:30am
Location:
The event will take place online via Zoom: https://zi-mannheim-de.zoom.us/j/68218573566?pwd=eRHm4WgC2dsfe23qiwIvhDXFGUK0Co.1
Meeting ID: 682 1857 3566
Passcode: 739321
Content:
The workplace environment and a team’s approach to mental health have a significant impact on the well-being of all employees.- In this Awareness Session, employees will learn about risk factors and warning signs of developing mental health disorders within the work context.
- Furthermore, you will learn strategies on how to correctly support colleagues experiencing mental distress, contributing to a workplace that promotes the mental health of everyone.
- To achieve this, it is essential to address the challenges and opportunities of discussing mental health at work.
- Among other topics, we will discuss the specificities of working from home (remote work).
- Additionally, participating managers will be introduced to the core elements of the MHFA First Aid program.
Speaker:
M. Sc. Veronika Lessel
Licensed Psychological Psychotherapist, responsible for MHFA First Aider courses/sessions, also active in outpatient patient care (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
Next Steps:
Following the Awareness Session, completion of the Mental Health First Aider Training is required (6 sessions of 2 hours each, held online). The training dates are listed below; alternative dates may be offered if you cannot attend all sessions.

Even if the kitchen table at home has to serve as a solution, employees can still work in a safe and relaxed manner.
For infection control reasons, many companies are currently planning to send employees to work from home, or have already done so. However, there will not be permanent teleworking stations everywhere. If available, the home office with a desk and office chair is the best place to work. But even if the kitchen table at home has to serve as a solution, employees can still work in a safe and relaxed manner. The German Social Accident Insurance Institutions provide the following tips:
- Set up the device so that, if possible, no windows or light sources are reflected in it or you have to look into the backlight. Daylight is best from the side.
- The distance to the screen should be 50-70 cm.
- Use a separate keyboard, mouse and, if available, a separate screen for working on the notebook, as they enable a more ergonomic working posture.
- It is best to look down at the screen from above in a relaxed position, as if you were reading a book. For optimum vision, the monitor should be tilted backwards so that your gaze is perpendicular to the screen. This ensures that the head is slightly lowered when looking at the monitor, which prevents tension.
- Change your sitting posture more often and take breaks to prevent back tension
You are welcome to use further illustrative tips and suggestions for working from home or read the detailed recommendation of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV)

The fact that hormonal changes during the menopause can also affect women's health and well-being at work is obvious and was recently confirmed by a study conducted by the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin): According to this study, menopausal symptoms are not only felt individually, but also lead to sick leave, a health-related reduction in working hours and job changes for a relevant proportion of women.
Nevertheless, the topic of menopause is often taboo, especially in the workplace. Link to the study: https: //blog.hwr-berlin.de/menosupport/
