Hossen Alkhash successfully defended his doctoral thesis in architecture on the topic "Maṣyāf, a Historic Town in Syria. Urban and Architectural Development" successfully defended his thesis.

1. your doctorate is complete - what does that mean for you personally?

It's a major milestone in my academic career because I've not only deepened my specialist knowledge, but also learnt a lot, for example how to work independently on a topic and achieve results using the methods applied.

2 What is your dissertation about?

The urban and historical development of the small town of Maṣyāf in Syria, which has a famous castle and a walled old town. The study also includes analysing the different building techniques and forms as well as the conservation treatment of the historic building fabric.

3. what was a highlight or special experience in connection with your doctorate?

The contact with many people from different backgrounds and cultures during the documentation and information gathering, especially with the residents whose houses I analysed.

4. what plans do you have for your professional future?

Firstly, I would like to expand my practical experience with my current employer, which will greatly enrich my planned building research work in the near future.

5. what tips can you give future doctoral students?

Have enough passion for your subject, as a doctorate is a long process that requires perseverance.

6. why did you choose OTH Regensburg for your doctorate?

Because the supervisor of my Master's thesis at OTH Regensburg, Prof Kurapkat, was willing to co-supervise my doctoral thesis. I was very pleased to be able to work with him again as a highly qualified construction researcher.
