Launch of ‘Healthy Campus Regensburg’: University and OTH Regensburg join forces to promote student health

The University of Regensburg and OTH Regensburg are launching a joint initiative on 1 April 2026 entitled ‘Healthy Campus Regensburg – Exercise. Interaction. Participation.’. The aim of the project is to promote student health across both institutions, strengthen health literacy and establish sustainable structures for holistic student health management.

The two-year project is funded as part of the “Bewegt studieren!” initiative run by the General German University Sports Association (adh) in cooperation with Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) and is aimed at the entire Regensburg campus community.

The focus is on establishing a joint “Healthy Campus Regensburg”, which is reflected in an expanded, coordinated portfolio of sports activities, in long-term structures and in a campus design that promotes health.

“Through the ‘Healthy Campus Regensburg’ initiative, we are pooling our expertise and working together to create sustainable structures for the health of our students. It is particularly important to us to actively involve students and develop services that truly fit into their everyday lives,” emphasises Dr Uta Engels, Head of the Sports Centre and project lead at the University of Regensburg.

In terms of content, the project focuses on expanding shared structures, increasing the visibility of existing and new health services, and actively involving students in the development of tailored measures that strengthen their health literacy in their everyday student life and beyond. The main areas of focus are mental health, climate and health, promoting physical activity, and healthy and active teaching.

“Our aim is to work with students to create a campus where health is a natural part of everyday student life,” adds Dr Janina Curbach from the Healthy University initiative at OTH Regensburg.

A particular focus of the project is the creation of a visible space for student health on campus, which is intended to serve as a meeting place and a catalyst for physical activity and health-promoting behaviour.

Part of a nationwide initiative
“Healthy Campus Regensburg” is one of a total of 40 projects being implemented nationwide as part of the current funding phase of “Bewegt studieren!” – including 33 individual and seven collaborative projects. The aim of the initiative is to systematically strengthen health promotion and prevention in the higher education context and to embed them in structures, culture and teaching in the long term.

With their joint project, the University of Regensburg and OTH Regensburg are sending a strong signal in favour of a health-promoting university life – active, connected and sustainable.
