Code Week Bavaria

With confetti and creativity: OTH professor opens Code Week Bavaria

With a playful approach to numbers and logic, Prof. Dr Johannes Schildgen from OTH Regensburg kicked off this year's Code Week Bavaria at the MINT Labs Regensburg.

Prof. Dr Johannes Schildgen has been Professor of Databases and Big Data Analytics at OTH Regensburg since 2020 and is committed to digital education and promoting young talent as the STEM representative for the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics. With his internationally used educational games SQL Island and MonstER Park, as well as his work as an author and keynote speaker, he makes complex computer science topics accessible in a playful and understandable way.

Code Week Bavaria – part of the Europe-wide EU Code Week – is organised by MINT Labs Regensburg, among others. The starting signal was given on Saturday, 11 October, and until 7 November 2025, children and young people throughout Bavaria will have the opportunity to tinker, hack and code. From programming courses and robotics workshops to creative coding projects, there is something for everyone. This allows young participants to expand their technical skills in a playful way and immerse themselves in the digital world.

MINT Labs Regensburg has set itself the task of working with many partners in the region to get children and young people excited about topics in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology and to motivate them to get involved themselves. The initiative is supported by OTH Regensburg, the University of Regensburg and the City of Regensburg, among others.

After the opening by Prof. Dr. Schildgen and the official kick-off in the form of a colourful confetti explosion, the children were allowed to visit various workshops and laboratories in small groups. For the youngest participants, the programme offered a playful introduction to the world of computer science: using pen and paper, they programmed in a completely analogue way or intuitively laid out the path for small robots using arrows – making it child's play to understand the logic of programming.

The older participants were able to give free rein to their creativity: soldering, tinkering and programming Calliope robots resulted in their first technical projects. They were also able to design their own virtual reality and thus create their own personal digital world.

All information about the programme, participating in workshops or registering your own activities can be found on the Code Week Bavaria website at bayern.codeweek.de.
