Master's graduate from OTH Regensburg receives IfKom Prize 2024

The Engineers for Communication (IfKom e. V.) recently awarded this year's IfKom Prize to Matthias Solisch at OTH Regensburg for his master's thesis entitled ‘Algorithmics for the quality assessment of scattering parameters’. The prize was awarded as part of the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for a master's thesis leading to the academic degree of ‘Master of Engineering’.

In his work, Solisch focussed on algorithms for the quality assessment of scattering parameters of electrically linear networks. Scattering parameters are used to precisely characterise the transmission behaviour of electronic components. They are used in the automotive and telecommunications industries, where high data transmission rates play an essential role. Scattering parameter measurements are error-prone and sensitive to a sub-optimal measurement setup. They are not subject to testing, which entails potential risks for the component development process.

To ensure the quality of these measurements, algorithms were programmed that use physical properties such as passivity, reciprocity and causality of the data as evaluation criteria. Various methods were presented in the thesis to check the physical correctness of measurement data. Both high-quality and low-quality data sets were analysed, whereby the latter were intentionally generated by faulty calibration or defective measuring equipment. The algorithms were able to reliably identify these errors and confirm high-quality measurements.

The work thus makes an important contribution to ensuring the data quality of scattering parameters. Faulty measurements can thus be avoided and the development of high-performance, reliable components in the field of communication technology is supported.

IfKom has been awarding the IfKom Prize at OTH Regensburg for many years. The professional association of communication engineers is particularly keen to promote and honour outstanding Master's and Bachelor's theses. In doing so, IfKom emphasise the need to convince young people of the particular relevance of technical degree courses. The regional representatives of the association, Helmut Steinberger and Peter Stöberl, were delighted to be able to congratulate Matthias Solisch on completing his Master's degree and on being awarded the prize.

Ingenieure für Kommunikation e. V. (IfKom) is the professional association of technical specialists and managers in the communications industry. The association represents the interests of its members - engineers and engineering students as well as supporting members - vis-à-vis business, politics and the public. The association is open to students and graduates of degree programmes at universities in the fields of telecommunications and information technology as well as supporting members. The concept of networking is a key element of the association's work. ICT engineers in particular bear a high level of responsibility for society, as they determine the industry that brings about the greatest change processes. IfKom is a member of the umbrella organisation ZBI - Zentralverband der Ingenieurvereine e. V. With over 40,000 members, ZBI is one of the largest engineering associations in Germany.
