Lively Night at the OTH Regensburg: Cultural Evening Marks End of Ramadan

In a vibrant celebration on the evening of April 1, the Campus Friends community collaborated with the Muslimische Hochschulgruppe Regensburg (MHG Regensburg) to host a memorable Cultural Evening, marking the end of Ramadan, also known as Eid al-Fitr or the festival of breaking the fast for Muslims. With around 150 attendees from across the globe, the event buzzed with energy – filled with the rich sounds of traditional Muslim music and the enticing aromas of festive foods.

The Cultural Evening aimed to maintain strong bonds within OTH Regensburg’s international student network by promoting cultural diversity and acceptance. This event took place to educate everyone from all backgrounds about Islam and the significance of fasting during Ramadan.

Festivities kicked off at 5 in the evening, opening with a beautiful Quran reading session by Muhammad Fahed Kwayder, also known as Abu Shaker, and an insightful presentation by MHG Regensburg President Fatma Bellil who shared the meaning of Eid and how it is celebrated all over the world.

"Frankly, reading in front of an audience is something that the reader or speaker should practice on, and I have lived this experience for several years.” - Quran reader, Abu Shaker

No celebration is complete without food, and the buffet did not disappoint. A wide array of traditional dishes from Turkey, Syria, and Tunisia have offered everyone a taste of the diverse flavours that define the Eid festivities. A collection of sweet desserts and drinks were also present to provide a filling meal for everyone.

The food was lovingly prepared by dedicated members of MHG Regensburg. Each person contributed a traditional dish from their home country, creating a warm and heartfelt culinary experience. Cooking for over 100 people was no small feat, and it took place in the spacious kitchen of the Islamic Centre of Regensburg (IZR), which generously provided the space and support needed to make it all possible.

The festive feast was also an opportunity for students to connect and discuss their ways of celebrating Eid in their home countries, sparking interesting conversations between all participants; especially those who are seeking to understand Islam while keeping an open mind. Such discussions and connections highlighted how much we all have in common despite our cultural and religious differences. They fostered a strong bond among participants and enhanced the spirit of harmony that made the celebration even more beautiful.

As the evening ended, it was clear that this celebration was more than just a gathering – a vibrant reminder of the power of unity through cultural exchange. With full hearts (...and even fuller plates), students left not only with new friendships but also a deeper understanding of a cherished tradition. This event was an overall success for the MHG Regensburg and the Campus Friends, as its cultural essence was well-received by the attendees from a diverse range of cultures.
