Technical exchange and innovative construction concepts

From historic roof trusses to surf waves: the 16th Builders' Day at OTH Regensburg impressively demonstrated how diverse and future-oriented construction is today.

When tradition meets innovation, inspiration is born: On 17 October 2025, OTH Regensburg and the Association of German Master Builders, Architects and Engineers (BDB) hosted the 16th Master Builders' Day. The traditional symposium, which is organised in close cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, once again provided a prestigious platform for exchange between science, planning and construction practice.

The new Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Appelt, as well as the 1st Chairwoman of the BDB, Silke Bausenwein, and BDB Engineering Officer Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Kugler, welcomed the numerous guests from the fields of architecture, engineering and construction.

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Florian Scharmacher kicked off the technical programme with a presentation on preventive wood protection in building renovation. Using illustrative practical examples, he demonstrated how standards can be successfully applied in construction practice. Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Kugler then reported on subsidiary structures in historic roof trusses, using the example of St. Oswald's Church in Regensburg, from planning to execution.

Prof. Dr. Anne Niemann reported on the research project ‘Einfach bauen’ (Simple Building) with research houses in Bad Aibling. The project shows new ways of combining resource-saving and efficient construction with a high level of living comfort. Mag. Michael Brandl from XEOMETRIC GmbH made it clear that sustainable planning begins on the digital drawing board and presented the forward-looking BIM project ‘XEOTEL’. Florian Bielmeier, product manager at Schlagmann Poroton, rounded off the presentations on sustainable construction with his practical experience of using clay bricks and the DIN 18940 standard, which has been in force for two years, in the Steinhilber construction project in Moosbach.

In the final block of presentations, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sergej Rempel took the audience on a journey to the Augsburg surf wave and provided exciting insights into the engineering challenges and creative solutions that were developed together with students to realise the project. The varied programme was rounded off by Dr Anja Säbel, who highlighted the implementation and challenges of wood-iron constructions in her presentation using the example of the Hof boarding hall.
