Business Information Technology Laboratory
In the Business IT Laboratory students are able to acquaint themselves with information systems from reputable manufacturers. With its focus on business information systems, the laboratory offers the software development environment of the SAP R/3 system, data warehouse techniques, eCommerce, workflow techniques, production planning/logistics and other subject areas, in some cases in partnership with the Faculty of Business Studies. The laboratory has three SAP systems which are professionally operated in conjunction with a computer center, and an education system (IDES) which is already configured and ready for use. A selection of typical business processes is installed on the IDES system. These processes are documented and serve as a reference for the development of our own “model businesses”. There is also a development system in which students can train on the development environment of the SAP R/3 system. This system offers programming classes in ABAP as well as courses in system administration. Modern technologies such as object-oriented techniques and programming with controls are a main topic. Activities with SAP internet applications (SAP Portal, JAVA and ABAP) are planned following the switch to NetWeaver and the WEB Application Server 7.0. There is a Business Warehouse System (BI) for use by students attending the “Data Warehouse Systems” course. The laboratory systems and premises are available in particular for use by students preparing for finals who will find an inspiring environment and excellent opportunities for practice and discussion. The fact that OTH Regensburg always has the latest versions of the SAP software means that some projects with industry partners can be conducted directly in the Business IT Laboratory. There are also plans to use a document management system supplied by the Easy AG company. Students are able to enhance their skills incorporating archiving systems into existing information systems, archiving large sets of data and documents, and in the design of paperless business processes. Our teaching staff have many years of experience in the operation of large SAP installations.
